H. Widayat Centennial Celebration: 100 works for 100 years marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of renowned Indonesian artist Haji Widayat (1919-2002). The exhibition is put together to celebrate the magic that has enchanted so many for so long.
Widayat was an artist of incredible versatility and range who remained inventive throughout his artistic career of 50 years. As adapt in the naturalistic style as with modernist abstraction, Widayat was a storyteller at heart and his thematic interests spanned the imaginary, the mystical, and the everyday customs and pleasures of Javanese life.
Taking care to include the critical, the popular and the never-seen, the centennial exhibition draws entirely from the collection of Dr Oei Hong Djien and presents Widayat’s oeuvre in seven thematic sections:
Gallery 1: Abstraction, and Works on Paper
Gallery 2: Flora and Fauna, and Deep-Sea Fish
Gallery 3: Faces and Masks
Gallery 4: Mythology
Galleries 5 & 6: Everyday Life
H. Widayat Centennial Celebration: 100 works for 100 years is curated by Joanna Lee, and is launched in conjunction with Biennale Jogja XV (2019).
